Our children are very fascinated by how things were done "back in the olden times" as they put it. It helps that we watch Little House on the Prairie regularly. Another encouragement to think about the "olden times" is that my mom lives with us and she has a plethora of stories to tell! We often hear them more than once. I am thankful for that because it helps me to remember. It helps our kids to remember. I don't want any of us to forget the stories. A great time for stories is on trips. My mom will remember something and share the story about it. When we go camping mom will share a story before bed and then of course she's inundated with questions but that's o.k., we're on vacation and they loooove the stories! On rare occasions when Nathan and I are gone for the evening she'll share a story before their bedtime. I don't think she'll ever run out!
So today as I iron fabric to make valances for the boy's room windows Noah asked me how they ironed in the "olden times". I told him of how my Great Grandmother Sessions used to warm a real iron on the wood stove and run it carefully and quickly over clothing so it would iron out the wrinkles but not scorch the material at the same time. I then thought of how long and tedious a process this must have been! Putting the iron back on the stove to warm back up and doing the process all over again. Caroline Ingall's made it look so easy but I'm sure Great Grandma could have told a different story!
I have many goals for this blog. One is to keep friends and family far away up to date on our happenings. Another goal is to write regularly about the children's funny stories and write stories that I have known from my mom passing them down. I will try to regularly post some stories so that my children can read them years from now. I hope you all enjoy.
